18–32% expected €50k–€400k 18-36 months Medium risk ABITECH network available Invest+Fly eligible

Why now

Ethiopia earned approximately USD 2.6 billion from coffee exports in 2024/25, with over 470,000 tonnes exported, and the government is now intensifying value-added coffee export strategies. Simultaneously, the National Avocado Development Program is targeting a near ninefold production expansion from 400,000 to 3.8 million tons, with EU and East African corridors opening under AfCFTA — where Ethiopia shipped its first goods in October 2025.

  • Government's National Avocado Development Program targeting 191,000 hectares of cultivation and cold-chain logistics build-out
  • Record export revenue of USD 8.7 billion in ten months to mid-2026 — a 43% YoY rise — validating Ethiopia's export momentum
  • EIC Special Economic Zones generating USD 225 million in exports, an 80% increase, offering incentivised agro-processing facilities

What could go wrong

  • Birr currency volatility and ongoing sovereign bond restructuring may affect profit repatriation and input-cost predictability

Full analysis

Ethiopia is one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, with the IMF estimating 9.15% GDP growth in 2025 and the World Bank projecting 9.2% for 2025, driven by manufacturing, mining, and robust crop harvests. FDI reached a record USD 4.32 billion in the 2025/26 fiscal year — an 8% year-on-year increase — fuelled by sweeping macro-economic reforms including the birr floatation, the landmark Banking Business Proclamation No. 1360/2025 opening the sector to foreign equity, and Investment Board Directive No. 1082/2025 unlocking wholesale, retail, and import trade to foreign investors for the first time in over 50 years. Ethiopia shipped its first goods under AfCFTA in October 2025, bilateral border trade deals with Kenya were signed in December 2025, and exports surged 43% year-on-year in the ten months to mid-2026, generating USD 8.7 billion. The Bishoftu International Airport (USD 12.5 billion, groundbreaking January 2026) and GERD's completed transmission pipeline are generating thousands of downstream supply and logistics contracts. The EIC issued 528 new investment licences exceeding its annual target, and SEZ exports hit USD 225 million — an 80% jump — in the last fiscal year.
